Littlestone
on Sea
Romney Sands stretch from Dungeness to Dymchurch and most
of the land behind them is below sea level making for good
clean consistent wind. Sea breezes also tend to be a little
stronger here in the summer months. SE through to NE is
cross on shore but check the tide tables as at dead low
springs its a hell of a walk!
Getting there: A259 to New Romney, follow
signs for railway, carry on to the beach. Parking:
Next to the lifeboat station.
Pirate Springs
One of the Secret spots of Kent, Pirates can offer some
excellent down the line wave riding in strong SW to S winds.
Anything over a force 5 at mid to just before high tide
should cause some decent waves. In lighter airs it makes
for a good beginners spot although as the tide comes in
look out for the submerged groins!
Getting there: A259 through St Mary's
Bay and then look out for the disused petrol station, Coast
Drive will take you to the beach. Parking:
At the end of the road.
Hythe
A shingle and sand beach which can be sailed in anything
from SW to E. However SW is considered the preferred direction.
The beach is quite steep which can make launching difficult
at mid to low tide. Watch out for the other water users
as the sailing club is very active.
Getting there: A261 to roundabout turn
right off the A259 to Sandgate immediately after roundabout.
Parking: Stade car park.
Sandgate
This pebble beach has a small tidal range and at high springs
in a strong wind can produce a mean shore break. Best sailed
in SW to SE it can be a good spot for the more advanced
rider.
Getting there: Drive along the coast form
Folkstone, use the Sandgate Road and you shouldn't miss
it. Parking: Local car parks near beach.
